Vaporetto a Piazza San Marco, Venezia

I have always been interested in Venice. The canals and the history are unique as well as the art it has inspired. When we traveled there in 2018 one of my goals was to paint the piazza. There is an amazing painting of St. Marks Basilica in the Academy not more than a half mile from the piazza. My recollection is the painting was painted in about 1000 AD and the Basilica looks just like it did 1000 years ago! Where else in the world is there a 1000 year old painting and the building still standing? Its amazing. I don’t recall the artist or the exact date it was painted but I don’t think my recollection is inaccurate.

Vaporetto a Piazza San Marco, Venezia, 16 x 20 inches, Oil on Linen, 2023, Finished Painting

My depiction is based on a photo reference from our travels. I wanted to include some movement and the vaporetto (water taxi) was a perfect fit to contrast the time capsule of the piazza in the background against the movement of the water taxi.

I’ll post a few images of the oil painting in process.
