Those of you that are interested in tessellations may appreciate this post, however if you like my oil paintings you may not be impressed and not appreciate it. Let me explain the title first. This drawing is an intersection of three (3) different tiling groups ( of the 17 standard tiling groups, not counting aperiodic tessellations) that surround a porthole or time bridge. The horsemen (P1 group), the triceratops(P2 group) and the pterodactyl and bird(Pm group). These are the most common symmetries used by Escher in his tessellations. The intersection porthole or time bridge has the birds emerging and flying right to left while the pterodactyls emerge flying to the right. The horsemen travel from left to right into the page and the triceratops wander from right to left. I purposely left several horsemen and triceratops in outline form to make the drawing easier to understand. It would have been to complex with all of the motifs fully colored and this also sllows the progression to be followed.
The colored pencil allowed variation in lineweight and color to make viewing the structure more understandable.
The original drawing below was much less complex and was executed in graphite before I included the additional motifs and I was not happy with the simple concept. The second version I decided to colorize to make it more understandable. Hopefully this 2026 version is more elegant. Let me know if you like it. Thanks for wandering around with me in the tessellation garden!
