In July 2024 we saw both Mt Stomboli and Mt Etna erupting while we were visiting Italy. I completed two paintings from this very memorable experience. Stromboli has some spectacular events and while the residents of the island are all to familiar with the potential for destruction we were just amazed at how close people lived to the flows.
This is 16 x 20 inch oil painting on linen. I’ll post one intermediate stage and the final painting as well as a reference photo. There are several glazes under this little painting. It almost looks surreal but I tried to capture the view from the ship as we passed.
Colors included maganese violet, cad yellow, cad orange, indian yellow-orange lake, nickel titanate yellow, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, titanium white, alizarin crimson, phthalo green.
