Mount Etna, View of Taormina, Sicily
Mount Etna, View of Taormina, 24×36 inches, Oil on Canvas, 2025
We took the bus ride to the Town of Taormina to see a Roman Ampitheater and numerous other historical building sites. The town was preparing for a film festival when we arrived. A view of a portion of the town with Mt Etna in the distance was just down a short trail. It was a memorable view and I took a number of photos.
I knew I had to paint the view of Mount Etna. This painting is 24 x 36 inch oil on canvas. I made significant simplifications to the view of the Town to reduce painting complexity. I’ll post some of the stages of the painting, a sketch I did onsite and a reference photo.
Initial Stage of Development of Sky and Buildings. I used Manganese Violet in foreground and wiped it down. Second Stage with Refinement of Foreground and Mt Etna. Building the view of builings and adding details to secondary rock formations.Third Stage with more detail paying attention to light and shadow and getting base colors harmonized. Fourth Stage Developing Depth and Contrast of light and dark. I used Manganese Violet, Yellow Lake, Phthalo Green, Cadminum Orange, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Cerulean Blue and Nickel Titanate YellowFinal Painting, Mount Etna, View from Taormina, 24 x 36 inches, Oil on Canvas, 2025.Pencil, Sketch Onsite, July 2024Reference Photograph, July 2024
