The Clark Art Institute Reflecting Pool

The Cark Institute Reflecting Pool, Final (Revised), 20×24 inches, Oil on Linen, 2024

The Clark Art Institute has some elegant architecture and is a gem in Western Massachusetts. I have visited it several times. There was a world class exhibit of Van Gogh paintings there several years ago. I think it was in 2015. I have been to many, international museums and exhibitions but the “Van Gogh and Nature” exhibit at the Clark was by far the best I have ever seen. Kudos to the curator and people that worked so hard to make it happen.

This painting is of the reflecting pool at the museum. I took several reference photos. I struggled some with the foreground plaza and the best way to capture it reasonably accurately.

I’ll post a few stages. I’m very happy with the final. The palette had many colors which contributed to the challenge of the first version of the plaza. Doing reflections is difficult and I realized I made an error in the earlier version and had the small cedar tree in the wrong location so I made a correction.

Intermediate Stage, With Revision to Foreground Plaza, Used a Ruler as a Guide to Scribe Tiles.
First Version, Before Plaza modifications, Perspective is Poor on Plaza, Color Selection Not Good and Size was too Large
Initial Block in of Values, I didnt see the plaza problem at this stage
