Campanile di San Giorgio di Maggiore, Venice

San Giorgio di Maggiore, Venice, 16×20 inches, Oil on Linen, 2024

Just across the lagoon from St. Marks Plaza in Venice there is another beautiful church and bell tower. The Campanile and Abbazia di San Giorgio di Maggiore stands tall looking back towards St. Marks Plaza. I liked the slenderness of the bell tower and decided to paint it. I used a couple of reference photos from our travels in 2018 and used a few other references to capture the light as my photo lighting was at a low angle.

I used a a large number of colors but didn’t plan on using so many, anyway heres what I remember:

Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cerulean Blue, Cremitz White, Phthalo Green, Alizarian Crimson, Indian Yellow Orange Lake, Nickel Titanate, Manganese Violet, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White 2.

Spent a good amount of time working on angles and perspective and deciding what to include and exclude from the image and its placement on the canvas. I took a bit of artistic license in the presentation.

I’ll show a few stages.
