Roman Holiday

Roman Holiday, 18×24 inches, Oil on Linen, 2024

This painting depicts the Colosseum and a small portion of the Arch of Constantine. It was a hot summer day when we visited in July 2018. There were crowds and plenty of tourists waiting in line. The light and shadows cast across the Colosseum were amazing. I streched the arches to emphasize its height and made the colonade more compact because it was a truly massive structure. I used a refence photo I took but changed positions of people and scale to make the image familar yet unique. Many colors used and several sittings to finish it. Oh by the way, for a little fun I added myself to the painting. See if you can guess which figure is me.

I’ll post a few stages in its development.

First Stage

Value Study and Inital Layout

Second Stage

Adding Form and Color, Adjusting Perspective

Third Stage

Detailing Background and Planning Figures in Foreground
