Quiet Watch at Bar Harbor

Quiet Watch at Bar Harbor, 24×36 inches, Oil on Linen, 2024, Final Painting

I spent many hours hiking and wandering around Bar Harbor and Mt Desert Isle inthe 1990s when I lived in Bangor. In two and a half years I was able to hike every trail on Mt. Desert at the time but the Precipice as it was closed due to falcon nesting. I wore out one set of Technica boots and went half way through a second pair! Enjoyed every second hiking and finding views. I was never able to get around to all of the secondary islands at the time but did to the Porcupines.

This oil painting is from a boat tour of the lighthouses I took many years later. Its the “backside” and hidden view. I always like finding views that are not easy to get to. So I recently completed this view of the Life Saving Station.

The painting is 24 x36 inches on linen. I tried to paint mostly from memory but did use a refence photo I took as well when I needed to check shadows and values. The color palette was very loose and I used a multitude of colors to get the visual feel. I post a few stages during the painting process.

First Stage

Blocking in Values

Second Stage

Adding Detail and Color to Background, Developing Foreground

Third Stage

Third Stage, Adding Exposed Rock Face and Layering of Trees

  1. Beautifully done. I love how the calming colors in this one make me want to be out on a boat enjoying this place in person.
