Afternoon at the Portofino Reflecting Pool – Struggling with an Image

Afternoon at the Portofino Reflecting Pool (2023)

Progress on a painting can be interrupted due to many circumstances. This painting is a perfect example of a struggle to capture what was in my mind versus the photographs I had taken.

Overall it took 18 months to execute! Thats due to a number of factors; including my interest in the image, a struggle with perspective, value changes, building placement, and contrast in detail between the buildings and reflecting pool. The truth is it was a huge struggle. I dont think I have ever had so much trouble with a painting.

Possibly one other factor was it just never satisfied me. To some extent it still misses the mark and is not exactly how I pictured it. For long periods of time it just set in the corner of the studio untouched between painting sessions.

I thought I would show you several stages in its development and provide some timeframes.

I am going to post the final painting first and then show progress from beginning to end.
